Rebel Science Union (RSU) Guidelines

Effective Date: April 2025

What is The Underground Journal All About?

The Underground Journal is Rebel Science Union’s (RSU) community-run newsletter and zine. We’re a collective of furious scientists, designers, and writers committed to storytelling that amplifies scientists’ voices. We believe in bringing artists and scientists together, celebrating the intersections of science, art, healthcare, community, and activism.

Our core themes include:
Science • Research • Healthcare • Art & Design • Nature • Conservation • Sustainability • Community • Activism

What Kind of Stories Are We Looking For?

We seek media that brings a unique narrative or perspective to the current dismantling of science and research in the United States. We believe stories about science and the people who do it can foster resistance: Because there’s only one of you, and your voice matters!

Generally, we are looking for submissions that are 1,200 words or less (see below for details on specific sections), but we are happy to collaborate and accommodate larger pieces when possible. We are also seeking multimedia submissions, (illustrations, photographs, audio clips, short videos, etc).

Writer-Artist Match!

We encourage collaboration! If you’re a writer seeking an artist for your story, or vice versa, let us know if you’d like to be matched with someone.

Sections You Can Submit To:

  • Science Stories (500-1200 words):
Write about anything that’s got you fired up — an op-ed about the state of public health in the wake of Trump 2.0, a poem about blatant misogyny and racism in academia, or a short essay about how your science is helping save the planet. Let it out, we want to hear it! Below are some specific sections we’re hoping to include:

    • Essays: Mini-stories from your lived experience — reflections, challenges, hopes, and lessons.

    • Explainers: Have a topic you're excited about? Share your latest deep dive or favorite concept! We love accessible, curious explainers.

    • Creative Writing: Poems, musings, flash fiction, bring your creative voice into the mix.

    • Fun Stories: Because sometimes you just want to share joy, weird moments, or random science/art victories!

  • Multimedia Stories (length varies):
Show us your resistance art, comics, photos, or whatever inspires you! Some sections include:

    • Games & Puzzles: Turn science/healthcare/art-themed stories into puzzles, crosswords, mini-games, or activity pages.

    • Art & Design: Illustrations, comics, photography, infographics, poster designs, and more! Show us your visual storytelling.

  • Sabotage Hotline (50-100 words):
Anonymously report how your field is being reshaped or undermined by our current administration. Share any workplace drama, funding slashes, OSHA violations, and more.

How can I submit my idea?

We accept rolling submissions - Submit at any time! Access the Submission Form link here.

  • To pitch written stories: Send a short pitch (~200-300 words) or your completed work. In your pitch, highlight the key points of your story. Include a brief bio (1–2 sentences) and any links to your website/socials if you want to be credited.

  • To submit art or other multimedia: please send high-resolution files (.jpg, .png, or .pdf), along with a short description of your idea and a brief bio.

  • Image submissions: 300 dpi resolution preferred. File formats accepted: .jpg, .png, .pdf.

  • Video submissions: Please send a link (YouTube, Vimeo, Google Drive) instead of attaching large files.

Who Can Submit?

YOU!
You do not need to be a professional journalist, artist, or writer to contribute. We are looking for students, hobbyists, professionals, amateurs, retirees, activists, nature nerds, healthcare workers, scientists, artists, and anyone who cares about community, storytelling, and change.

Check out our Style Guide below for additional guidance and tips!

Tone and Style Guide

At the Rebel Science Union, we want to celebrate your authentic voice. Our tone is friendly, curious, and accessible. We hope to be a publication that feels like you’re talking to a friend over a casual dinner! This is a safe space to express yourself.

Our Style:

Creative formats are welcome.
Lists, letters, poems, rants (with heart), how-to guides, mini-interviews, even comics - we love them all!

Plain language preferred.
Use simple, clear words when possible. If you need to use technical terms or jargon, briefly explain them.

Storytelling matters.
Personal voice and anecdotes are encouraged, even if you get into the nitty-gritty of the science.

Keep accessibility in mind.
Short paragraphs, clear headings, and easy-to-read formatting make your work more accessible to everyone. Our team can also offer support for this aspect.

Extra Tips for Contributors:

Write from a place of curiosity and care.
Whether you’re telling a story, explaining a concept, or sharing artwork, what moves you will move others.

Embrace your unique perspective.
Our community is made stronger by different experiences, backgrounds, and styles. No matter your own path, your story belongs here.

Editing support is available.
If you want some help polishing your piece before it goes out into the world, we’re happy to work with you or connect you to a collaborator in our community.
